My Interop 2027 picks
For the second time, Firefox made a page that lets you rank the Interop 2027 features that you care about. Interop is an effort by multiple companies involved in shaping the web to make the platform more interoperable. This is your very low-effort option to contribute to the future of the platform we love, so please do so.
Totally inspired by Ana Rodrigues who published “My Interop feature ranking” and Tyler Sticka who followed with “My Interop 2027 Ranking”, here is my list.
- Customizable/stylable
<select>. I have been waiting for this since the day I started building things for the web. It is incredible to see implementation for customizable form elements in modern browsers. Let’s polish some rough edges and make the forms more interesting. - JavaScript
Temporal. Dates and times in JavaScript are just hard without it. - CSS grid lanes (masonry). This is the thing I use on few of my personal projects already and in some situations it is progressively enhanceable, I would love to see the support for it everywhere.
- CSS gap decorations. I love this feature and I want to use it more. I’m tired of
background-colorand1pxgap just to mimic what the gap decorator should be. Also, this trick is impossible to use nicely on masonry layouts. - CSS scroll snap events. Another use case from personal project. I want to make a different calculation on the element based on the fact if it is snapped or not.
- CSS
interpolate-sizeproperty andcalc-size()function. Animating height to auto! Another thing I wanted for ages. Yes please! - Interest invokers. More things like that, less JavaScript, is all the modern web needs.
- CSS
@supports at-rule(). Key for the progressive enhancement of some modern features. I love progressive enhancement and more powerful@supportsis the way. - CSS
reading-flowandreading-orderproperties. Visual order of things doesn’t always makes sense. Folks useorderall over the place without too much of considerations. Things become even more complicated with the masonry layouts. This is kinda must have. ariaNotify(). With great responsibility comes great power and abusing this feature can degrade experience for screen reader users, but when used wisely can help a tonnes.
